TEME VALLEY BREWERY

Teme Valley Brewery has a rich history with beer. It was opened in 1997 by Annie and Wiz Clift, who also ran the Talbot Pub at Knightwick, Worcestershire. The brewery was a natural extension of the Clift family’s long-standing hop-growing tradition at their nearby farm, Lulsley Court, run by their brother Philip. Given that the Clift’s had been growing hops since the 19th Century, opening their own brewery seemed like the logical next step.

Brewing equipment was installed behind the Talbot Pub in August 1997 and in September, brewer Chris Gooch joined the team. At Lulsley Court, five hop varieties are grown and in October of 1998 to celebrate the first anniversary, a beer was made from each hop variety to give the public the chance to see the different flavour profiles.

As the hops are freshly harvested, they are known as ‘green hops’, and, much like using fresh herbs in cooking, they give the beers a fresher, punchier flavour than using dried hops. That was the beginning of the Green Hop Festival which still runs today, with over 20 guest beers making an appearance.

The beers are all bottle-conditioned to preserve consistency, and all of them are winners of Great Taste or SIBA awards.
